Gold is one of the first metals discovered by humans — found naturally in riverbeds as shiny nuggets. Evidence of gold use dates back over 6,000 years, particularly in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley. Early humans valued gold for its beauty, rarity, and resistance to tarnish rather than for practical use. The oldest known gold artifacts come from the Varna Necropolis (Bulgaria), around 4500 BCE, showing advanced craftsmanship.

Ancient Civilizations (3000 BCE – 500 BCE)

Egyptians (around 2600 BCE) were among the first to mine gold systematically. Gold was seen as the flesh of the gods, especially the sun god Ra. Pharaohs like Tutankhamun were buried with vast gold treasures. Mesopotamians and Harappans used gold for jewelry and trade. China also started using gold for ornaments and religious artifacts around 2000 BCE. Lydia (modern Turkey) was the first civilization to mint gold coins (around 600 BCE), marking the beginning of gold as money. Classical and Medieval Periods (500 BCE – 1500 CE) Greeks and Romans expanded gold mining — Spain, Nubia, and parts of Europe became major sources. Romans used gold coins (Aureus) for trade across their empire. In the Middle Ages, gold symbolized wealth and power for kingdoms and churches. Alchemy in medieval Europe tried (and failed) to transform base metals into gold — but it laid groundwork for modern chemistry.
